Shows, Program and Features
For the puposes of this discussion, the difference between Programs and Shows is:
African Roots in general is a Show
Jill's particular African Roots last Saturday was a Program
To confuse matters, a show can be:
either a Program - 30 minutes or longer, scheduled at an exact time (Ragtime America)
or a Feature - less than 30 minutes, played some time during a Program (Dark Cloud)
A show can be:
Music (such as the ASA)
News / Public Affairs (such as the BBC news)
Announcements (such as the Concert Calendar)
Mix (such as Indian Voices)
Finally, the source can be:
KGNU - the visitor can listen to it on line
External - we refer the visitor to the producer's website
Editing a program's info
You may add information about any particular program on kgnu. This appears on the Home Page (for upcoming programs and for what's playing now or played last), in the Listings page, and in newspapers.
To edit that info:
Go to the Listings page (there's a link to it on the Home page, on the top right)
Select the date of the show (use the date entry boxes at the top, or use the Previous or Next buttons)
Find the line with the program you want to edit
On the left, there's an edit icon:
. Click it. A window will open. If you are not at the KGNU studios, you will be asked for name and email address
Edit the info, click Save
The changes will appear immediately in the More Info box (
) for that program. The Home Page and the Listings page will be rebuilt at the half-hour mark. You may rebuild those pages manually, if you want.
Rebuiding a page
The content of many pages is dynamic: it changes when data changes. In particular, some pages, such as the Home Page, are rebuilt every 1/2 hour. You can also rebuild a page manually.
Rebuild and Refresh are 2 different things.
Rebuild means that the page itsellf is updated with new content, at the server, so this affects everyone.
Refresh means that you are getting a fresh copy of the page in your own computer, so no one else is affected.
To rebuild a page:
Click on the rebuild icon (
) at the bottom of the page. This rebuilds it in the server, for everyone to see You may need to refresh the page (
). This gets just your own computer to get a new copy of the page from the server.
Directory info
The directory, http://www.kgnu.org/cgi-bin/directory.py, lists all KGNU people.
Some information is visible to the public (name, what they do) but the private information is visible only within the KGNU studios (phone numbers, email address...)
Hover your mouse over an item, to see more information about that item
The Filter section at the top lets you, optionally, select a smaller group of people to display
The Display box, above the list, lets you select what type of information is displayed
To add a person (only within the KGNU studios) click on the
symbol at the bottom of the list. A window will open. letting you enter that person's information To edit a person's information (only within the KGNU studios) click on the
symbol to the left of that person's name. A window will open, letting you edit that person's information In particular, the create / edit window lets you specify:
OKs: whether that person's info will appear on the KGNU.org site, and whether they want to receive Emails
Show remind: if that person hosts a show, how many hours before that show they receive an email to remind them of it
Shows: which shows that person does. This lists lets you select multiple shows: hond the Control key as you select or unselect additional choices. Warning: if you click a choice, without holding the Control key, all other choices will be deselected
Adding a Host
The list of hosts in the "Edit this program's description" dialog is derived from the KGNU Directory. People in the KGNU Directory who are marked as "not on the air" are not listed as possible hosts. To add yourself to the list of hosts:
From within the KGNU studios, go to the KGNU Directory
Find your name (if not listed, see above on how to add your name)
Click the
icon to the left of your name Click the
icon at the bottom: all the fields become editable Make sure all your info is correct. In particular, if you have an on-air name, enter it in the "a.k.a." box
Select one of the "On Air Name" buttons, depending on how you want to be listed. If you click "Both", then you'll be listed twice, once under yor real name, once under your pseudonym
For "Area", click "Music" or "News" (or both), as applicable
In the "Shows" list, select all the shows you do (click the first show, then hold the Control key, as you click more shows in the list)
Click "Save"
