Intro
KGNUers who need it can get a you@kgnu.org email address.
Ways of doing it
There are 2 ways of doing this:
Alias -
User account -
Alias
This is the simplest solution. When we get a message sent to your kgnu address, all we do is pass it on to your personal address.
For example: you@kgnu.org --> you@yahoo.com
You will receive such messages the way you receive all your mail.
Evan can set this up for you. Tell him where we should send that email.
When you write people, they will see it coming from your personal address, not from your kgnu address. However, it's possible to create a new user in your email application, so that messages from you will appear to be coming from your kgnu address.
User account
We actually create an account for you, and hold your mail in our server.
Evan can set this up for you. Tell him the password you want to use.
You do email in one of two ways:
Through the web, with SquirrelMail
Through an email application in your computer
SquirrelMail
Use a web browser to go to kgnu's mail server, http://mail.kgnu.net/
Enter your kgnu account (the word before the '@' symbol) and the password you gave us.
Email application
Receiving messages
Set up a new account in the email application in your computer to get messages from our servers.
Sending messages - you have 3 options
You can do nothing. Your messages will appear to be coming from your personal email address (such as you@comcast.com)
You can create a new user in your email application, so that they'll see it coming from your kgnu address (you@kgnu.org), though they'll still be coming from your regular email server (such as comcast).
You can set up your email application to use our server to send mail. Only do this if you do not already have an email account with someone else. They'll see mail coming from your kgnu address (you@kgnu.org), and it will really be coming from kgnu's email server.
Spam
There's one thing that will help more than anything else to prevent spam. Do not ever put your address directly on a webpage, blog or the like, where email address harvesting robots can find it.
Instead, disguise the address ("you AT kgnu DOT org" or "youREMOVETHIS@DIE_SPAMMERS_kgnu.org"). This applies also to kgnu's website. Either refer people to the email page, or disguise your address.
On KGNU's email page, all addresses are protected from spam robots with JavaScript. On this wiki, use the HelpOnMacros/MailTo macro like this: [[MailTo(Firstname DOT Lastname AT IGNORETHIS example DOT net)]] which then appears like this: <Firstname DOT Lastname AT IGNORETHIS example DOT net>
