Intro
The KGNU InfoTech committee runs the computers and networks at http://kgnu.org
Members of the committee with accounts here should be registered in the InfoTech/AdminGroup so they can do administration on this wiki.
Meetings
We meet monthly, at 6 PM, KGNU Boulder studio. See InfoTech/Agenda for the date.

General
DJ user interface
Can enter:
More info about a CD
URL for more info (band website)
URL for purchasing (Amazon or the such)
DJ comments that stay with the CD (as opposed to with the playlist), HTML OK, limited size
Full size review of CD
More info about a cut (English translation, featuring, originally done by...)
When starting, DJ and Show fields could default to the DJ and show running or just starting (using same data presently used in the kgnu.org listings)
No need to save (same as present AutoSave). Yet, it shouldn't add any delay to the entering process
Somehow, make it so that the latest entries are visible without the need to scroll, to ease back-announcing
For 'Various Artists' compilations, add some new field to allow individual track artist to be recorded separately from the track's title.
Music Director user interface
Listener user interface
Button that opens a pop-up with more info on a cut, if any
Show the play time (understanding that it is approximate at best) to help people figure out about when something was played
Link back to KGNU.org
For 'Various Artists' compilations, listener interface should show individual track's artist under the artist column (instead of 'Various Artists') so that searches for a particular artist's plays will include those that come from compilations.
Innerworkings
Network - WAN, LAN, etc
MySQL based, running on kgnu.net
Uses same tables as presently used for kgnu.org

Also uses additional tables

SWOT Analysis
The Planning Commitee asked us to do a SWOT analysis of the issues that we cover.
SWOT = Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats
This is how they describe the 4 boxes:
Strengths: What do we do well? What unique resources can we draw on? What do others see as our strengths? |
Weaknesses: What could we improve? Where do we have fewer resources than others? What are others likely to see as weaknesses? |
Opportunities: What good opportunities are open to us? What trends could we take advantage of? Looking at our strengths, how can you turn these into opportunities? |
Threats: What trends could harm us? What is your “competition” doing? Looking at our weaknesses, what threats do these expose us to? |
Think of it as a matrix of GOOD/BAD, INTERNAL/EXTERNAL

Strengths
We have a strong team, of experienced, clever, committed individuals.
To a great extent, the staff is very supportive when we request equipment to continue our mission.
The nature of KGNU is such that wide opportunities present themselves for technical solutions. This is an ideal environment for creative technologists to derive pleasure from the opportunity to invent and execute solutions to a variety of opportunities.
The philosophy of KGNU has affinity with the Free Software and Open Source and Creative Commons philosophies, giving us great opportunites for synergy with those movements.
Weaknesses:
Each of us is involved in other activities as well, which at times doesn't let us focus entirely on KGNU.
Due to the diversity of interests and skills of KGNU hosts, and the diversity of interests of the audience, some shows will be judged as lacking in interest or quality at times.
No one at KGNU is in charge of saying "thank you". To those of us who thrive on appreciation, KGNU is sometimes not a nurturing environment. Insufficent appreciation has resulted in the loss of valuable contributors.
Opportunities:
The internet may very well become the main medium through which our programming is distributed, and through which our funding is derived.
Threats:
The growing use of DRM (Digital Restrictions Management) is denying Fair Use and crippling creativity in the arts and sciences
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act severely limits what we can offer to the public.
As everyone jumps on the podcasting bandwagon, we risk losing the edge that we have held in webcasting since the dawn of webcasting.
Spam, bad hackers, careless KGNU users, KGNU luddites are a constant threat to the systems we put in place.
MP2s
This is a short audio file generated by ContentDepot.
It's an MP2 wrapped into a .wav wrapper.
Davide is looking for a way to uncompress it into a standard .wav file.
Answer: the ffmpeg program can do this:
ffmpeg -i mp2.wav mp2-new.wav
